Starting a side hustle or business is hard! It’s not easy to get into the flow of things, learn the business and stay focused on what to do next. I’ve taken up several habits over the years to help me stay focused on my business goals throughout the day; I’ve condensed them down to only 10.
I hope you’ll find them useful on your journey to becoming financially wealthy and independent! Read on!
1.) Take 30 Minutes Every Morning to Watch an Inspirational Video
The hardest part (for me at least) is to stay motivated, that’s why I start off each day with a short inspirational session to keep me going.
I typically go on YouTube and look up: “Motivation” or try to find a TED Talk; then I choose one of the 15-30 minute videos. There’s nothing wrong if you turn this into a short mediation session, or watching the sun rise. Whatever INSPIRES you is good..!
2.) Take 30 Minutes to Work Out
The Greeks were firm believers that a healthy body was an essential part of mental and psychological well-being.
More recently, the World Health Organization has determined that: “Physical activity of any intensity (including light intensity) provides health benefits, and helps reduce the detrimental effects of high levels of sedentary behaviour on health.”
If you find you’re having trouble concentrating, another research publication also suggests that exercise can improve your concentration as well. You could even workout at a strategic time in your day so that you can come back to what you were doing, feeling refreshed and invigorated.

3.) Get Dressed for Success
Even if you can safely work in your P.J.s from the comforts of your own home, you’ll have a hard time convincing the world that you’ve got something they want if you’re don’t dress the part.
Take the time to shower, brush your teeth, brush your hair, and look (and FEEL) your best!
Besides, after 30 minutes of cardio, you should be just about prime for a shower anyway!
4.) Drink a Glass of Water Before Every Meal!
This helps reduce the amount of calories I take (feeling full sooner), and keeps me hydrated! Win! Win!
5.) Eat Well!
Everything I’ve done so far has been about staying motivated; getting my best foot forward, and stay focused on my business goals..!
So why would I even consider eating stuff that will only undo everything I’ve done and drag my energy levels down!? I’ve gotten this far! Good nutrition is as simple as:
- saying no to bad fats, sugary drinks and juices;
- saying yes to water; and
- eating two handfuls of fruit / veggies, and one handful of protein with every meal!
Oh yeah, and don’t forget the good fats (Omega 3s; Avocado, olive, peanut, canola oils)..!! I occasionally add a thumb-sized portion in a smoothy!
6.) Start With the Most Challenging Task First!
Now that I’m mentally and physically prepared, and fully motivated; it’s time to tackle those tasks that need my full attention.
I find that while I’m at my best, it’s easier to get those harder tasks out of the way first, and leave the more routine stuff (like answering emails) for when I’ve got less energy!! I call this my “Power Session.”
This is all about getting out of my comfort zone, and tackling all those things that I know I should be doing to achieve my goal. It’s the perfect time to work on any roadblocks that are preventing me from moving forward!
- If I have to write a 1000 word article, it’s time to get it out of the way.
- Do I need to call 50 people? I roll-up my sleeves and get it done..!
- A potential clients needs to see a business proposal? I get started!
I don’t care if I can only concentrate on the task for an hour!
It’s important that I give that task my best shot for as long as I can maintain it, and then I put it aside. What I haven’t finished, I can tackle it again when my energy is back up.
Even if it ends up taking me 3 days to finish that task, at least it’ll be one step closer every time I work on it.
7.) Schedule the Easiest Tasks After a Power Session!
While it’s important to tackle the harder jobs when you’re feeling your best; I find it refreshing to switch gears and tackle the more mundane tasks when my energy is starting to falter.
This allows me to catch-up on emails , return phone calls, and book new appointments; AFTER I’ve reached an important milestone in my day.
8.) Each Rejection is Worth $500!
While we’re on the subject of returning phone calls, this is a takeaway from one of the courses I took recently:
The person giving the course told us that he finally landed a $35,000 business deal after making 70 calls!
His takeaway from his calling session? It took getting rejected 69 times, before finally getting a yes; so he figures that each call he made was worth $500! How’s THAT for motivation!?
Now, before you start telling me that $35,000 isn’t a lot… how long could you stay self-employed with another 35K in the bank?
Is it suddenly worth the effort of going through the 4-5 hour ordeal of calling 70 people, if you can land another $35,000?
Of course it is!!
9.) Take the Time to Plan for Tomorrow, Today.
If you don’t know what you’re planning to do with your day, chances are you won’t be as productive as you could have been if you had planned your day out ahead of time.
We touched briefly on why I tackle the harder tasks while I’m feeling energized in #7, but we also talked about the fact that it might take more than one day to get those off my list.
This allows me to stay on track by planning out my day, and sticking to my routine.
10.) Wind Things Down, and Get a Good Night’s Sleep!
It’s as simple as curling up with my favorite book, taking a bath, and turning in.
Healthy sleeping habits go hand in hand with my energy and concentration levels, and are key in staying focused on my business goals throughout the day!
So hit that pillow already!
